College Board’s AP Computer Science Principles

The College Board’s AP Computer Science Principle syllabus is designed to help high school students learn more about the field of computer science. Its introductory course, Computer Science Principles, has been piloted in 45 high schools for three years. Since then, nearly 1500 teachers have been trained to teach the course. It is one of the largest debuts for an AP in College Board history. Compared to AP World History, which had 998 teachers in its first year, this new syllabus is expected to reach a much larger student body.

While AP Computer Science Principles is not considered one of the hardest AP classes, it is difficult nonetheless. It requires a solid grasp of computer science and offers students the opportunity to work on real computer science projects together. In addition to being a challenging course, it builds upon foundational math skills and helps students apply those skills to computer science. Despite the class’s rigor, students can expect to earn a high score on the AP exam.

Colleges that offer credit for AP CSP

AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) is a high school course that will replace AP Physics B in fall 2016. The course focuses on innovative aspects of computing, computational thinking practices, and the connections between computer science and everyday life. Students can take both courses or one of them for credit, whichever suits their schedules. Students are expected to learn the theory behind coding while solving real-world problems.

The AP CSP course was developed to offer an introductory course in computer science that would appeal to diverse students. According to a study by The College Board, AP CSP students were three times as likely to major in computer science in college than their peers in non-computer science courses. This new course also focuses on the rules of computer coding languages and creative problem-solving. It has more than 2,000 participating high schools across the U.S. and Canada.
